All About Barrington New Hampshire

Barrington NH was incorporated in 1722 and has a population of about 8,275 people according to the 2006 Census. It is located in the southeastern part of New Hampshire in Strafford Countyabout one hour from Boston or Portland and 30 minutes from Portsmouth. It is a town with rural character and historic roots. Formed by two land grants - one in 1719 and known as the "Two Mile Streak" and the other in 1722 by Royal Grant of King George I of England. Barrington comprises 46.7 square miles of land and 1.9 square miles of inland water. Barrington was named for the colonial English Governor of Massachusetts and New Hampshire, one Samuel Shute of Barrington Hall. His brother was Viscount Barrington. Governor Shute was one of the first to promote industry in the area and set aside the strip of land to become known as "Two Mile Streak" for the purposes of securing and smelting iron ore on the Lamprey River. Today Barrington is an active residential community with access to fishing, swimming, snowmobiling and camping.

 Don't go to Barrington without stopping at Calef's Country Store established in 1869 at the intersection of Rte 9 and Rte 125. This old fashioned store offers great sandwiches at the deli, a large selection of cheeses, fresh bread, and native made New Hampshire jams, jellies and condiments. The kids will love the candy counter! The Christmas Dove across from Calef's has a amazing selection of Christmas ornaments and is worth a visit year round. Down the road, the Sugar & Ice Creamery on Rte 125 has delicious homemade ice cream in fresh waffle cones with outdoor seating. Nippo Lake Golf Course, home of the Chip & Run Pub is a public course with breath taking views and abundant wildlife. Located on Province Road.Christmas Dove

Barrington has many lakes and ponds for outdoor recreation. Ayers Pond is a 236 acre warm water body located off Route 202. You can find Ayers Lake Campground here. There is town access off Rte 202 but it is an unimproved area. Small Mouth Bass, Large Mouth Bass, Chain Pickerel, Hornpout, White Perch, and Black Crappie are the predominant species. Winkley Pond is an 11 acre pond visible from Route 125 with no public access. Mendum's Pond is home to the University Of New Hampshire Recreation Area. Small Mouth Bass, Large Mouth Bass, Chain Pickerel and Hornpout are also located in this pond. Nippo Pond has Town Public Access and is great for boating. Swains Lake has many residential homes surrounding it and is a wonderful location for fishing, swimming, water skiing in the summer and snowmobiling in the winter. There is public access to Swains. Two rivers run through Barrington - Isinglass River which flows into the Cocheco and the Lamprey River which feeds the Bellamy River. This is all part of the Piscataqua River Watershed area.

Barrington is part of School District SAU#74 and is home to Christian school, a charter school and a branch of the University of New Hampshire. Good Shepard School is for Kindergarten through High School and is a non-denominational Christian school. Cocheco Arts & Technology Academy is New Hampshire's first charter school for college prep students interested in the arts and technology. Finally you can finish your education at Granite State College which is part of the University System of New Hampshire for life long learning.
